Mangan Cybersecurity ICSSbD® Specifies Actions to Protect Energy Networks

On March 24, 2022, the U.S. Department of Justice indicted agents working for the Russian government for their involvement in cybersecurity intrusion campaigns against U.S. refineries and energy companies.  These campaigns were reported to have taken place between 2011 and 2018.  The Russian cyber actors gained remote access to U.S. and international Energy Sector networks to deploy malware focused on causing harm and damage to industrial controls systems (ICS).

The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) released recommendations and mitigations to harden the ICS environment.  All of these are actions included in the Mangan Cybersecurity ICSSbD® Evaluation Toolkit.  Specifically, the recommendations to design and implement robust network segmentation, enforce multi-factor authentication and to manage user accounts are essential Tier 1 and Tier 2 solution recommendations for more than a dozen known threats to defend against unauthorized system operating mode and firmware revisions, valid accounts and credentials and network intrusions.

About the ICSSbD® Toolkit: The Industrial Control Systems Secure by Design (ICSSbD®) Toolkit is a proprietary application and database developed and managed by Mangan experienced engineers to organize and manage a client’s OT cybersecurity assessment. The ICSSbD® asset-based model is built around the Mitre Att&ck® knowledgebase while the assessment methodology is aligned with the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Cybersecurity Framework (CSF). The Toolkit is used by Mangan’s cybersecurity evaluators to produce comprehensive assessments and provide guidance for proposing solutions to manage and control the client’s operational technology focused cybersecurity risks. Services available within the ICSSbD® Evaluation Toolkit include Threat and Risk Analysis, Profiles Development, Gap Analysis, Recommended Countermeasures, Business Alignment and Tiered Reporting.
